Today’s blog is a bit different than my last blogs in which I’ll be connecting dots between Government and Social Media. Ever wonder, how government implement this powerful tool? We are going to find out in this blog.

There is no doubt that social media has revolutionised the way we communicate. In this modern world, every big brand is using social media to engage with the public later this trend followed by small businesses and non-profit organisations. But, now this trend is shifting to government bodies as well. They are using it in the most creative ways, and we will try to look for other ways in which government can use social media.

There are 2.5 billion social media users in the world today (Walter, 2016). It makes social media, public’s best place to engage in government and public related issues. It has become a very powerful tool for the public as it provides transparency of thoughts and immediate response to state issues. With the help of social media, people can freely express their opinions on small to very serious issues to attract government attention to it. It has made government functioning pro-active.

Ways government can put in use to work along with the people

For awareness campaigns

In today’s technological world, Government highly relies on Public opinions and their support to stay in power and function smoothly. To engage people in some healthy conversation, it is vital that government also actively participate in such digital conversation on social media platform.

76 percent of American policymakers reported social media enabled them to have more meaningful interactions with their constituents (Congressional Mangement Foundation, 2015).

Social media use for Crisis Communication

Social Media also changed the way government communicate during an emergency situation. It is a great way to keep people notified and sending out warnings during natural calamities like earthquake, wildfire, Tsunami. It is the fastest way of reaching to the maximum number of people in a very short time.

Crime Prevention and Police Assistance

Social media can be of great help to police to provide assistance and crime prevention tips in public interest. It also makes it easy to identify and catch wanted criminals by posting their photos and other related information online.

These are some of the main uses of social media by the government. With the change in technology, there is going to be many new ways by which social media in government will expand and same goes for the social media use of large and small businesses.
